INVITE A LITTLE VINTAGE IN

Vintage decor is having A Moment. We asked our Instagram fam “Have you incorporated vintage pieces into your home?" Many of you replied that you want to but don’t know how.  Here are three quick ways to do it!

But first - why? What can vintage pieces bring to your room?

  • A softness and warmth - think watery images, patina finishes, textured wood, soft gold frames.
  • A sense of history
  • A hint of different times in places you love (ie. old London, Impressionist France, pioneering Vernon)
  • A break from your primary style

Our top tips for integrating vintage...

1. Ensure your vintage additions tell the same story as your base pieces.

Example: every image in a good gallery wall should tell the same story or evoke the same mood. That mood (serene, playful, eclectic, urban, graphic) will dictate what kind of vintage pieces make the best inclusions. That rule applies to larger spaces  as well.

The images below are natural, misty, muted greens, serene - any further images need to sing the same tune!

2. Follow the ole’ 80/20 rule

Ensure that 80% of your room is styled in your primary style, with no more than 20% being in the accent style (in this case, vintage).

Does your dining room have a modern (glass, marble, polished wood) table and modern chairs? Use vintage or mid-century dishes and flatware.

Below: Predominantly clean lines and minimal detail is accented with more elaborate wood nightstand and a global design chair.

 3. Go for contrast.

Exactly. Clean modern lines + nubbly textures. Craggy wood + smooth marble.  Monochrome colour scheme + vintage pastel accents.

"Vintage additions can give a space which might otherwise be on-trend but lifeless, a real sense of depth, personality and soul," says Martin Waller, director at Andrew Martin.

Have fun!
